The company also builds a variety of home styles in each of its markets, targeting primarily first-time and first-time move-up homebuyers under the name Richmond American Homes. Its subsidiaries also provide mortgage financing, insurance and title services, primarily for Richmond American homebuyers, through HomeAmerican Mortgage Corp., American Home Insurance Agency, Inc. and American Home Title & Escrow Co., respectively. The company's business consists of two primary operations, Homebuilding and Financial Services. The primary functions of its Homebuilding operations include land acquisition and development, home construction, sales and marketing, and customer service. Its Financial Services operating segments are as follows: HomeAmerican Mortgage Corp., which originates mortgage loans, primarily for its homebuyers; Allegiant Insurance Co. Inc., which provides insurance coverage primarily to its homebuilding subsidiaries and certain subcontractors for homes sold by its homebuilding subsidiaries and for work performed in completed subdivisions; StarAmerican Insurance Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the company which is a re-insurer of Allegiant claims; American Home Insurance Agency, Inc., which offers third-party insurance products to its homebuyers; and American Home Title & Escrow Co., which provides title agency services to the company and its homebuyers in Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada and Virginia. M.D.C. Holdings was founded by Larry A. Mizel in 1972 and is headquartered in Denver, CO.
